One Direction is a British-Irish boy band consisting of Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and former member Zayn Malik. They competed on the seventh season of The X Factor in the UK and finished in third place. Despite losing, the group was signed to Syco Music.

One Direction's first single, "What Makes You Beautiful" was released on September 11, 2011 and debuted in the UK Singles Chart at number one on September 18, 2011. It became the third fastest selling single of 2011 selling 153,965 copies. Their second single, "Gotta Be You," was released on November 11, 2011, and peaked at number three.

In the five years since becoming a band, One Direction has sold over 11 million albums worldwide, and are the first band to ever have four albums debut at #1 on the Billboard 200. All four of One Direction's albums have sold over a million copies in the USA.

On March 25, 2015 it was confirmed through a statement on Facebook that Zayn had quit the band due to prolonged stress, but Horan, Styles, Payne and Tomlinson would continue as a four piece.

One Direction is currently completing a world tour and recording their fifth album. On July 31st, 2015 One Direction surprise released the first single from their fifth album, Drag Me Down. It reached number one on iTunes in over 60 countries worldwide. The band announced via their official Twitter that they originally planned to release the single on August 7th, but couldn't wait and decided to release it earlier.
